Bottom line: Nami Island is a fully doable day trip from Seoul using public transportation alone. Take the ITX-Cheongchun express train from Cheongnyangri Station to Gapyeong Station (about 40 minutes), then a local bus (route 10-4, about 5 minutes) or a short walk to the Nami Island ferry pier, where you board the ferry. The real question is the return trip: the last ITX-Cheongchun train from Gapyeong back to Cheongnyangri departs at 10:31 p.m., and even if you miss it, the regular Gyeongchun Line commuter train keeps running until 11:53 p.m. on weekdays (11:38 p.m. on weekends/holidays), so you are not actually stranded.

If you didn't know: Most visitors memorize only "last ITX-Cheongchun train, 10:31 p.m." and assume missing it means being stuck in Gapyeong overnight. Not knowing that the slower, cheaper Gyeongchun Line commuter train runs 1 hour 22 minutes later on weekdays (1 hour 7 minutes later on weekends/holidays) leads people to needlessly book a late-night taxi or scramble for a room in Gapyeong. Also, Nami Island stops selling tickets 30 minutes before closing, so arriving at the pier after 8:30 p.m. (based on standard 8 a.m.-9 p.m. hours) means you cannot buy an entry ticket, let alone board the ferry, that day.

At a glance: [Train] Cheongnyangri–Gapyeong ITX-Cheongchun: about 40 minutes; adult fare 5,700 won (standard seat) / 4,800 won (standing/unreserved); 26 services a day; from Gapyeong toward Seoul, first train 6:28 a.m., last train 10:31 p.m. [Commuter train] Gyeongchun Line regular electric train: from Gapyeong toward Seoul, first train 5:29 a.m. weekdays / 5:55 a.m. weekends, last train 11:53 p.m. weekdays / 11:38 p.m. weekends and holidays (fare follows the Seoul metropolitan integrated distance-based system, cheaper than the ITX). [Local transfer] Gapyeong Station to the Nami Island pier: bus route 10-4 (about 5 minutes) or taxi. [Nami Island] Admission (round-trip ferry included): adults (middle-school age and up) 19,000 won, middle/high-school students 16,000 won, ages 3–elementary school 13,000 won; open 8 a.m.–9 p.m. (ticket sales end 30 minutes before closing, open year-round, extended hours in peak season). [Ferry] Runs roughly every 30 minutes between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., every 10–20 minutes during the busy 9 a.m.–6 p.m. window. [Address] Nami Island ferry pier: 1024 Bukhangang-byeollo, Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do / Nami Island itself: 1 Namiseom-gil, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. Here's what the trip actually feels like. From the moment you take your seat on the ITX-Cheongchun at Cheongnyangri, Seoul's apartment blocks give way to the Bukhan River within about ten minutes. Passing Pyeongnae-Hopyeong and Maseok, the view fills with mountains and river, and by the time you reach Gapyeong the air itself feels different. If you'd rather save money, the regular Gyeongchun Line commuter train is also an option — slower, but usable with a single transit card, and frequent enough that you're not racing a timetable.

Getting off at Gapyeong Station, take bus 10-4 out front or grab one of the taxis lined up there. At the Nami Island pier, buy your ticket (round-trip ferry included) and head to the boarding area. During the busy window of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., boats arrive every 10 to 20 minutes, so there's rarely a long wait to cross over. Just remember that ticket sales end 30 minutes before closing.

Once on the island, a path of metasequoia trees and a riverside walk along the Bukhan River unfold, with the scenery changing by season. But it's easy to lose track of time. The real trick to a successful day trip is working backward from the last connection — pier to Gapyeong Station, then Gapyeong to Seoul via the ITX-Cheongchun (last train 10:31 p.m.) or the Gyeongchun Line commuter train (last train 11:53 p.m. weekdays, 11:38 p.m. weekends) — before you even plan what to do on the island.
