Tax Refund Korea 2026: Immediate Refund or Airport Refund — Minimum ₩15,000, Which Method Pays More at Olive Young?

Bottom line: If you're shopping at Olive Young or other K-beauty stores, first check whether the register has an 'Immediate Tax Refund' sign and whether the store partners with Global Tax Free (GTF). At an immediate-refund store, scanning your passport at checkout instantly deducts the VAT, so there's no need to queue at the airport. If the store doesn't offer immediate refund (a standard tax-free store), you must keep every receipt of at least KRW 15,000 and process the refund yourself at an airport refund counter or kiosk — such as at Incheon International Airport — before you leave the country.
If you didn't know: If you pay in full at a non-immediate-refund Olive Young store for a KRW 300,000 purchase without realizing it, the VAT eligible for refund comes to about KRW 27,273 (300,000 × 10/110). After the refund operator's commission — about 30% of that VAT, per Global Tax Free's own IR disclosures — the amount you actually get back drops to roughly KRW 19,000. To claim it, you must go through an airport refund counter on departure day, but Incheon Airport's Terminal 2 staffed service desk closes at 21:30. Travelers on late-night or early-morning flights after that time can only use the 24-hour unmanned kiosk, and if the kiosk line is backed up, you can miss the refund process entirely and simply lose that roughly KRW 19,000.
At a glance: △ Minimum purchase — KRW 15,000 or more per receipt (lowered in 2024) △ Immediate refund limit — under KRW 1,000,000 per transaction, up to KRW 5,000,000 total per person (downtown refund: up to KRW 6,000,000 per transaction) △ Airport (retroactive) refund — no purchase-amount limit △ Commission — refund operators keep about 30% of the eligible VAT (per Global Tax Free IR disclosures), so the effective refund rate is about 70% of the VAT △ Incheon Airport refund counters — Terminal 1, 3F near Gate 28 (staffed desk 07:00–22:00, 24-hour kiosk, +82-32-743-1009); Terminal 2, 3F near Gate 253 (staffed desk 07:00–21:30, 24-hour kiosk, +82-32-743-2732) △ Inquiries — Incheon International Airport customer service, 1577-2600 (07:00–22:00 daily).
Walk into one of these stores and the first thing that hits you is that sweet, slightly alcoholic mix of skincare and perfume testers. At Olive Young's 'global tourism district' branches in Myeongdong or Gangnam, the checkout line is crowded with wheeled suitcases even on a weekday afternoon. Many of these large tourist-zone stores partner with Global Tax Free to offer immediate refunds — in fact, CJ Olive Young's own tally of foreign-customer sales (which passed KRW 1 trillion as of August 2026) is based on sales where VAT was refunded through GTF. In other words, the busier a store is with foreign shoppers, the more likely it is to have an immediate-refund system in place.
Not every store is the same, though. Immediate refunds stop applying once a single purchase exceeds KRW 1,000,000 or your cumulative total during your stay passes KRW 5,000,000; amounts above that are handled as a later, retroactive refund instead. Whether it's immediate or retroactive, a single receipt must total at least KRW 15,000 to qualify, and receipts from separate stores are not combined. Checkout requires your physical passport (or a mobile passport QR code), so it helps to have it out before you start shopping.
Any receipt that didn't get an immediate refund has to be settled on the day you leave. At Incheon Airport, before checking your bags, carry your duty-free items to a kiosk or service desk in the departure-hall tax-free zone and scan your passport; for higher-value items that require customs verification, you'll need your passport, the unopened goods, and your purchase confirmation at the customs desk. Refunds can be paid in cash (won, dollars, etc.) or credited to a card — a useful option if the amount is large or you'd rather not carry cash.
