Bottom line: Foreign nationals aged 17 or older can use the Smart Entry Service (automated immigration gates) on arrival without pre-registration, as long as they submit fingerprint and facial data at entry. Holders of an Alien Registration Card or Domestic Residence Report aged 14–16 can use it after pre-registering, and those aged 7–13 must register together with a legal guardian. Citizens of mutual-recognition countries (including the U.S. and Germany) and Korea Visit Reward Card holders also qualify.

If you didn't know: When foreign arrivals bunch up, regular immigration lines have reportedly stretched to 1 hour 20 minutes — well past the 45-minute wait recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Not knowing you qualify for the automated gates means standing in that extra line for nothing.

Registration locations — Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2, Gimpo, Gimhae, Daegu, Cheongju and Jeju airports, Busan and Incheon international ferry terminals, and immigration offices in Seoul, Busan, Incheon and Suwon · Bring your passport (plus Alien Registration Card if you have one) · Multilingual helpline 1345 · From July 2026, Incheon Terminal 2 is running a pilot registration center through December for unregistered minors aged 7–17.

The automated gate works by placing your passport on the scanner and following on-screen prompts to scan your fingerprints and face — no conversation with staff required, so limited Korean or English isn't a barrier. First-time arrivals who have never submitted fingerprint and facial data must go through a staffed counter once on this trip before they can use the automated gates on future visits. The Ministry of Justice says it plans to expand the service to more airports based on the pilot results.
