Bottom line: To get your tax refund at Incheon Airport before departure, look for a self-service refund kiosk first, not the staffed counter — the kiosks run 24 hours. In Terminal 1 they sit near Gate 28 in the duty-free area on the 3rd floor and near Gate 115 on the 3rd floor of the Concourse; in Terminal 2 they're near Gates 248, 250, and 253 in the duty-free area on the 3rd floor. All you need is your passport, and the kiosk processes it instantly in 10 languages.

If you didn't know: the staffed counter closes at 10 p.m. in Terminal 1 and 9:30 p.m. in Terminal 2. If your flight leaves late at night or in the early morning and you arrive after that, a staffed counter simply can't process your refund. Travelers who don't know about the 24-hour kiosks and instead wait in line, only to run out of time before boarding, end up forfeiting the entire refund — which can run from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of won.

At a glance

Minimum purchase 15,000 won per receipt (receipt and passport required) · Staffed counters Terminal 1, 7 a.m.-10 p.m. (Korea Information & Communication); Terminal 2, 7 a.m.-9:30 p.m. (Nice Information & Communication) · Self-service kiosks Terminal 1, near Gate 28 (duty-free, 3rd floor) and near Gate 115 (Concourse, 3rd floor), both 24 hours; Terminal 2, near Gates 248/250/253 (duty-free, 3rd floor), 24 hours · Inquiries Terminal 1: +82-32-743-1009, Terminal 2: +82-32-743-2732.

Whenever you buy something worth 15,000 won or more at a duty-free or downtown store, ask for the tax-refund form along with your receipt on the spot — without it, your passport alone won't get you a refund at the airport. The self-service kiosk looks like an ATM: scan your passport and the approved refund amount is paid out immediately. If the amount is large or you'd rather not take cash, you can also have it sent to your own card. Since these kiosks sit in the area past security, don't pack your refund documents or the purchased items in checked luggage before you've claimed the refund.
