Bottom line: there are WOWPASS machines at Incheon Airport, but you cannot turn dollars or yen into won at them. The operator's own guidance says that at Incheon Airport "only KRW top-up is available." The airport machines issue cards and take Korean cash. If you arrive holding foreign banknotes, use an airport exchange counter, or a WOWPASS machine in the city.

If you didn't know: the trap is landing with foreign cash, walking to the WOWPASS machine, and finding the slot will not take it. The airport machines sit in the CU convenience store no. 1 in Terminal 1 and CU store no. 3 in Terminal 2, and per the operator they do not support cash exchange or balance withdrawal. What they do is new card issuance, reissuance, and topping up with Korean cash.

So what should you do at the airport? It splits two ways. If you brought any Korean cash at all, get the card at the airport machine and top it up there, and you can use it immediately. If you brought only foreign currency, change what you need at an airport exchange counter and top up the card with that.

You can also buy a voucher online before you fly. You get a code by email; at the machine choose card issuance, then issue by reservation code, scan your passport and enter the code. Insert the card once to activate it, and register it in the app to see your balance.

There are around 195 machines nationwide, including subway stations and hotels in Seoul, so you do not have to settle everything at the airport. If you land late at night, though, check the hours of the city machines first.

The fee comparison is covered in a separate article. This is guidance compiled from the operator's official information, not financial advice. Machine types and services change, so confirm with the official guidance before you travel.
