Bottom line: For a night view over Seoul without spending a cent, go to Naksan Park — you can walk there from Hansung University Station on Subway Line 4, and since it's a gate-free park with no admission fee, it slots easily into any evening itinerary.

If you didn't know: Many travelers start by searching for a paid observation deck or a night-tour package to see Seoul's skyline, but Naksan Park charges no entry fee and has no fence or fixed opening and closing hours to begin with. Not knowing that and booking a paid viewing deck instead means spending money and reservation time on a view you could have gotten for free.

41 Naksan-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul · Free admission · Inquiries: 02-743-7985 · Walk from Exit 4 or 5 of Hansung University Station (Subway Line 4) · About 2.1km of fortress-wall walking trail along the Naksan section of the Seoul City Wall.

After sunset, the lights along the fortress wall switch on one by one, and as you walk the Naksan ridge, the glow of Jongno and Dongdaemun spreads out in the distance between the people strolling past. Walking the wall trail lets you see a surviving stretch of the Seoul City Wall that once encircled old Hanyang, giving you a feel for the outline of old Seoul in a way that's different from visiting a palace. The city of Seoul's own media channel also introduces this spot as a free night-view destination. If you're walking alone at night, stick to the well-lit stretches of the trail and avoid pushing on into the quieter, emptier sections.
