Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Free Entry 2026: What Counts, Rental Prices, and Where to Rent

Bottom line: Wear a hanbok to Gyeongbokgung Palace. Any hanbok with a jeogori (top) paired with a chima (skirt) or baji (trousers) gets you free admission — the 3,000-won fee waived — for Koreans and foreign visitors alike. A short walk from Anguk Station, the Hanboknam Gyeongbokgung branch (133-5 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul) rents hanbok from 6,860 won via WAUG or Naver Reservation, same-day bookings included.
If you didn't know: A one-piece "fashion hanbok" dress, or jeans worn under just a jeogori top, does not qualify for free entry. Rent one of those by mistake and you pay the 6,860-won rental fee and still owe the 3,000-won admission at the gate — 9,860 won total. Wear a qualifying hanbok instead, and a group of four saves 3,000 won each, 12,000 won for the day.
Gyeongbokgung adult admission 3,000 won (free for both Koreans and foreigners in qualifying hanbok) · Hours: Mar-May & Sep-Oct 09:00-18:00 (last entry 17:00); Nov-Feb 09:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00); Jun-Aug 09:00-18:30 (last entry 17:30) · Closed every Tuesday · Hanboknam Gyeongbokgung branch, 133-5 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul · Open 09:00-19:00 daily (until 21:30 during Gyeongbokgung's night openings), no closed days · Rental from 6,860 won (starting price; varies by item) · Book via Naver Reservation or WAUG (https://www.waug.com/ko/activities/109853) · Shop contact 010-6485-8507 · Palace inquiries 02-3700-3900.
The Korea Heritage Service's Royal Palaces and Tombs Center spells the rules out in detail. A jeogori counts as long as it closes with an overlapping collar — ties (goreum) are optional. Trousers pass if their cut resembles traditional sapok baji, even without ankle straps. Any style of chima, gathered or flat, is accepted. What fails: a durumagi coat worn alone, jeans paired with just a jeogori top, or a hanbok skirt worn over a T-shirt. Both traditional and everyday-style hanbok qualify under the same rule, and it applies equally to foreign visitors — get the combination wrong and even a foreign tourist can be turned away at the gate. Walk the stone path from Gwanghwamun Gate toward Geunjeongjeon Hall with a hanbok skirt trailing behind you, and the silk brushing the paving stones registers before the view does.
Renting is straightforward. Pick a date and package on WAUG or Naver Reservation and pay; a voucher arrives by KakaoTalk within an hour. At the shop counter, staff confirm your name and phone number against the booking, and you choose your hanbok on the spot. Return it before closing time — late returns can incur an extra charge depending on the shop, so ask when you pick it up. The voucher is valid through December 31, 2026.
