Bottom line: A day in Yongsan-gu works best in this order — the War Memorial of Korea (see), Taco Stand in Haebangchon's Sinheung Market area (eat), then a walk up Namsan's Sowol-gil path (do). The War Memorial opens at 9:30am, tacos are served from noon, and Namsan is best climbed before sunset, so this sequence makes the most of each place's hours.

If you didn't know: The War Memorial is free, but it's closed every Monday. Show up on a Monday without knowing that and the entire "see" leg of this route disappears — you'll walk all the way to Samgakji Station only to turn around, wasting half a day. Namsan's cable car costs money, but walking up via Sowol-gil costs nothing and gets you near the summit in about 40 minutes. Head straight for the cable car ticket booth without checking the fare first, and you may end up spending more than you needed to for the same view.

At a glance

War Memorial of Korea — free admission, open 09:30-18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed every Monday, Samgakji Station Line 4/6, Exit 12, 3-minute walk · Taco Stand (Haebangchon) — 34 Sinheung-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, open Tue-Sun 12:00-22:00 (closed Mondays), tacos from 3,800 won each, sold individually so solo diners are fine, card acceptance could not be confirmed from official sources so bring cash as a backup · Namsan's Sowol-gil walking route — free, about 40 minutes · Namsan cable car — reportedly operates 10:00-23:00 (secondary source only, official site unreachable to confirm), exact adult fare could not be confirmed this round — check at the ticket booth.

Start the day at the War Memorial. Walk out Exit 12 of Samgakji Station and the main gate is right there; just wandering among the outdoor-displayed fighter jets and tanks can easily eat up an hour. From the exit, it's roughly a 20-minute walk to the entrance of Haebangchon's Sinheung Market. It's a hillside neighborhood lined with small shops, and Taco Stand makes a light, non-Korean lunch option. In the afternoon, head from Haebangchon toward Namsan and climb Sowol-gil. It's a steady uphill climb, so wear real shoes — reach the ridge around sunset and all of Seoul opens up below you. If you'd rather ride the cable car instead, note that its lower station is on Sopa-ro in Jung-gu, a different entry point than Sowol-gil.

It's about a 15-20 minute walk down from Namsan to Myeongdong. To get back to Hongdae or Seoul Station, transfer to the subway in Myeongdong — exact last-train times by line couldn't be confirmed in this research, so check Naver Map or Kakao Map's last-train feature on the day itself for the most accurate answer.

The wasted-trip trap: the War Memorial's Monday closure. Because it's free, it's easy to assume "I can go anytime," but more than a few travelers walk all the way to Samgakji Station on a Monday only to find the doors shut. When planning a Yongsan-gu day, avoid Mondays entirely.
