How Far Into Korea Have You Been? ① The village you enter on a 30cm-wide plank bridge — Museom, Yeongju

In Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, the Naeseongcheon stream wraps almost entirely around a village of tiled-roof and thatched hanok houses. Museom Village is designated a National Folk Cultural Heritage site in its entirety — the same river-bend geography as famous Hahoe Village, but without the tour buses.

The village icon is a single-plank wooden bridge: about 30cm wide and roughly 150m long, once the only way in and out. Crossing it in single file above a sand-bed river is an experience hard to find anywhere else in Korea. When two walkers meet, one steps aside onto a short spur bridge to let the other pass — even the bridge has rules of coexistence.
