Glass Underfoot, the Donggang River Below — Jeongseon's Byeongbangchi Skywalk
Stand at the edge of an observation deck 583 meters above sea level, its floor cut away and replaced with plain glass, and your knees will start shaking on their own. Below, the Donggang River (which flows through Jeongseon and Yeongwol in Gangwon Province) sweeps in a wide curve around the mountainside, tracing a green ribbon of water, and every gust of wind tightens your grip on the glass railing. Byeongbangchi is considered Korea's first glass-floor observation deck. Looking straight down through the glass at the sheer cliff and the Donggang River far below, almost everyone grips the railing without meaning to. The river bends in a broad curve around the ridgeline, like a ribbon laid across the landscape — carved slowly as water cut into hard rock. On clear mornings, thin fog often settles in the valley, making the river look like it's floating above the clouds. The deck's faint tremor in the wind, the vertigo rising through the glass underfoot, birdsong, and the smell of river air all pull on your senses at once.
The deck sits inside "Jeongseon Arihills," which also offers a zip line and mountain-bike course, so if heights don't bother you, add the zip line across the valley. Jeongseon is inconvenient to reach by public transit alone from Seoul, so the realistic route is an intercity bus to Jeongseon Terminal, then about five minutes by taxi or rental car — arrange transport in advance given the mountain roads.
