The Andong International Mask Dance Festival centers on a World Mask Dance Competition featuring troupes from Korea and abroad, alongside courtyard plays, original productions, and a street parade called Daedong-nanjang that fills the day. "Talchum" (mask dance) is a traditional Korean dance performed wearing a mask carved from wood or made of paper, historically used to satirize the noble class and voice the grievances of commoners through movement alone. Andong's own Hahoe mask dance was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022. During the festival, troupes from countries such as France, Indonesia, and Japan also perform, so part of the appeal is seeing how each country's mask dance differs in expression and movement, all in one place.
Hands-on programs let visitors carve their own mask or learn a short dance sequence, which tends to stick in memory far longer than simply watching a show.
