Miss the 30-Minute Window and It's Over — Pay 1,500 Won More Every Bus Ride

Kim Taecheol, ReporterPublished KST

A foreign traveler walks out of a subway station toward a bus stop, stops at a nearby cafe for a drink, and boards the bus at a leisurely pace. Tapping the transportation card on the reader deducts the fare as usual, but because more than 30 minutes have already passed since getting off the subway, the full 1,500-won bus base fare is deducted again without any transfer discount, and the traveler never notices.

At a glance: transfer window within 30 minutes of getting off (60 minutes between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.); up to 4 transfers allowed (5 rides total); no extra charge within a base distance of 10 km (30 km for express buses), plus 100 won for every additional 5 km beyond that; subway base fare (card) 1,550 won; city bus 1,500 won; village bus 1,200 won; applies only when paying with a rechargeable transportation card.

The integrated transfer discount system for Seoul metropolitan area public transport, run by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, means you are not charged the base fare again when switching between the subway, Seoul city and village buses, Gyeonggi and Incheon buses, and GTX-A express rail. You must board the next mode of transport within 30 minutes of getting off (60 minutes between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. the next day), and you can receive the transfer discount for up to four consecutive transfers, meaning up to five modes of transport in a single day.

With the transfer discount applied, there is no extra charge at all if the total distance traveled is within 10 km (30 km for express buses); beyond that, you pay only 100 won for every additional 5 km (80 won for teenagers, 50 won for children). On the other hand, if you miss the transfer time window or fail to tap out when getting off, so the transfer is not recognized, you have to pay the full base fare for the second mode of transport all over again, just as if it were your first ride. Switching from the subway to a bus adds the full 1,500-won bus base fare, while switching from a bus to the subway adds the full 1,550-won subway base fare. If you miss this condition twice in a single day while moving between the subway and buses, you can end up paying more than 3,000 won extra.

The transfer discount applies only when paying by rechargeable transportation card; it is not available with cash or a single-journey transportation card, and switching to the same bus route or the same subway line again does not count as a transfer either. In particular, if you do not tap your card on the reader again when getting off a bus, the next transfer is cut off entirely, so it is important to make a habit of tapping the card on the reader every time before you step off, even once you have reached your destination.

In short, the surest way for a foreign traveler not to miss the transfer discount is never to forget to tap the card when getting off the subway or bus, and to plan the schedule so that no more than 30 minutes (60 minutes late at night) pass before the next ride. That one small habit can save up to 1,500 won or more on every transfer, two or three times a day.
