Tongin Market in Seoul's Jongno District is known for a lunchbox experience where visitors pay with brass coin tokens instead of cash. At the market's "Dosirak Café," you exchange money for 500-won coin-shaped tokens, then walk the market's alleys filling your lunchbox with banchan — namul, jeon, japchae — from designated stalls.

At a glance: Address 18 Jahamun-ro 15-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul (Tongin Market) · Tokens sold weekdays 11 a.m.–3 p.m., weekends 11 a.m.–4 p.m. · Café itself closes at 4 p.m. on weekdays, 5 p.m. on weekends · Each token is worth 500 won, exchangeable up to 10,000 won's worth · Closed every Tuesday and the third Sunday of each month · Unused tokens can be refunded in cash.

The process is simple: get an empty lunchbox and as many tokens as you want from the Dosirak Café, then walk the market's banchan stalls handing over tokens for whatever food catches your eye. The catch is that the window for buying tokens is shorter than it looks. On weekdays it closes at 3 p.m., and even on weekends it's gone after 4 p.m. — the café itself shuts for the day at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends.

That's why it's not unusual for tourists who arrive at Tongin Market later in the afternoon to find they can't do the lunchbox experience at all. The safest plan is to see Gyeongbokgung Palace or the Seochon hanok village in the morning, then time your arrival for lunch. If you don't use all your tokens, the café will refund the unused balance in cash, so there's no need to exchange more than you'll actually eat. What one token buys varies by stall, but most dishes run around 3,000 won, so 10,000 won's worth of tokens is usually enough to fill a lunchbox with three or four different banchan. Even if you miss the lunchbox window, most of the market's stalls open early in the morning, so simply browsing is still an option.
