Many foreign tourists exchange money at a bank counter the moment they land at Incheon Airport, but it can be the most expensive option available. Airport exchange counters charge noticeably higher fees than private exchange shops in areas like Myeongdong. Changing your entire budget there out of convenience simply means walking away with fewer won in hand.

At a glance: Bank exchange counters inside Incheon Airport charge dollar exchange fees of around 4 percent, both buying and selling, without any discount applied · Ordinary exchange shops in areas like Myeongdong charge around 1 percent even without a discount · Exchanging in advance through a Korean bank's mobile app can bring the preferential discount up to 80–90 percent · Fee comparisons across banks are available through Korea Federation of Banks data.

Say you're converting 1 million won into dollars. At an Incheon Airport counter, the fee alone runs about 40,000 won. Do the same exchange at a Myeongdong shop and the fee drops to around 10,000 won, and if you pre-exchange through a bank app with a 90 percent discount and pick it up at the airport, the fee can fall to around 4,000 won. Simply choosing a different method can mean a difference of more than 30,000 won on the same 1 million won.

If you're short on time and need to exchange money at the airport, it's better to change only a small amount for immediate use there and handle the rest at a private exchange shop in Myeongdong or Dongdaemun. Applying for an exchange through a Korean bank's mobile app before departure also lets you pick up the discounted amount directly at the Incheon Airport counter. To compare rates across banks, Korea Federation of Banks data lists each bank's fee discount rates. It's also worth factoring in that paying directly by debit or credit card usually adds a foreign transaction fee of about 1 to 2 percent, which can tip the balance toward one method or another.
