Plenty of travelers walk straight through the green "nothing to declare" lane after landing at Incheon Airport, but carrying items over the duty-free limit can come back as a hefty penalty later. The rule applies equally to every traveler entering Korea, regardless of nationality.

At a glance: Basic duty-free allowance is 800 US dollars per person · Alcohol gets a separate allowance of up to two bottles (2 liters total, worth 400 dollars or less), and cigarettes up to 200 · Getting caught without declaring adds a 40% penalty on the tax owed, rising to 60% if caught twice or more within two years of entry · Declaring voluntarily before arrival cuts the tax owed by 30%, up to 150,000 won · Korea Customs Service's mobile declaration app lets you file in advance from your seat.

The 800-dollar allowance is calculated per person, not per family. If the combined value of what you bought at duty-free shops or abroad goes over 800 dollars, you're required to declare it and pay tax at the arrival hall. Walk through undeclared and get caught, and a 40% penalty is added to what you owe — and if you're caught twice or more within two years of entry, that climbs to 60%. Hiding it and getting caught ends up far more expensive than declaring it upfront. This threshold is especially easy to cross if you've bought several pricier items, such as designer bags, watches, or health supplements, so it pays to add those up carefully.

Declaring in advance actually works in your favor. Whether you fill out a paper customs form or use the Korea Customs Service's mobile declaration app ahead of time, you get a 30% discount on the tax owed, up to 150,000 won. The app can be filled out on the plane without an internet connection, and it issues a QR code that lets you go straight through the self-declaration lane or an automated gate at arrival — saving time as well as money.
