Mention Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, and most people think only of "Suncheon Bay Wetland." But the spot foreign visitors actually flock to sits right next door: Suncheon Bay National Garden. Built on the site of the 2013 International Garden Expo and kept as a permanent park, it brings together gardens from 11 countries — the Netherlands, France, Germany, and more — alongside a traditional Korean garden, all in one place. This April, annual visitor numbers passed one million four days earlier than last year, with the growth in foreign visitors standing out in particular.

At a glance: Adult admission 10,000 won (check separately for teen and child rates) · open 9:00 AM-8:00 PM, last entry 7:00 PM (subject to change with weather) · closed the last Monday of every month and March 31 · one same-day re-entry allowed · one ticket also gets you free same-day entry to Suncheon Bay Wetland.

The garden's biggest selling point is "two sights, one ticket." Buy a ticket to the national garden and you can walk into Suncheon Bay Wetland the same day at no extra charge. The wetland offers its S-curving waterway and reed fields, while the garden lets you compare landscaping styles from around the world in one visit — so for 10,000 won, you are effectively seeing two attractions. Same-day re-entry is allowed only once, though, so if you plan to move back and forth between the garden and the wetland, it helps to map out your route in advance.

In October, the reeds overlap with blooming cosmos flowers, a combination domestic visitors often call the best photo season of the year. Inside the garden, a driverless rail car called the Skycube can carry you to the wetland, a useful option for families traveling with people who have trouble walking long distances. The park closes on the last Monday of every month, so it's worth checking the calendar before you pick a date, to avoid showing up on a closed day.

From Seoul, the usual route is a KTX train to Suncheon Station, followed by a city bus or taxi to the garden entrance. Both the garden and wetland involve a lot of walking outdoors and can easily take half a day or more, so comfortable shoes and water are worth packing. It's best to double-check the current fee and closure schedule on Suncheon's official tourism website before you go.
