Naengmyeon Price in Seoul 2026: ₩12,538 Average vs ₩18,000 at Woo Lae Ok

In front of Woo Lae Ok, an old Pyongyang-style naengmyeon restaurant in Seoul's Jongno district — opened in 1946 by a founder displaced from the North, who recreated the taste of home and turned it into one of Seoul's most storied old eateries — a long line forms even on weekday lunchtimes, foreign tourists among them. Customers often double-check the menu price when they see what Pyongyang naengmyeon costs.
At a glance: according to Chamgagak, the price-information portal run by the Korea Consumer Agency, the average price of a single serving of naengmyeon in Seoul in March 2026 was 12,538 won, up 3.5% from 12,115 won in March 2025. Woo Lae Ok, meanwhile, raised its Pyongyang naengmyeon price over the same period from 16,000 won to 18,000 won, a 12.5% (2,000-won) increase.
That puts a bowl of naengmyeon at Woo Lae Ok at 5,462 won, or about 44%, above the Seoul average. The average reflects everyday neighborhood eateries and casual restaurants, which means a famous old establishment like Woo Lae Ok, often featured in guidebooks, charges far more.
The trouble is that first-time visitors to Korea, unaware of this gap, are especially likely to head straight for the famous restaurants they've seen in guidebooks or travel blogs. Even for the exact same dish, the price difference between a neighborhood eatery and a famous old shop can run over 5,000 won a bowl — more than 10,000 won for two people.
Naengmyeon — a classic Korean summer dish of buckwheat or starch noodles served in cold broth or cold seasoning — comes in two main types: mul-naengmyeon, served in broth, and bibim-naengmyeon, tossed in spicy sauce. To avoid sticker shock, one option is to treat a visit to a famous old shop as part of the sightseeing experience, and save everyday, budget-friendly meals for neighborhood restaurants.
