Bottom line: If you're hauling a suitcase or a stroller onto the Seoul subway, check that station's elevator location on the "Seoul Donghaeng Map" app before you get off. It signs up instantly with a KakaoTalk, Naver or Google account, and routes you along paths with elevators and escalators, accounting for curbs, slopes and narrow sidewalks. If a station's elevator is missing or under repair, ask a station staffer directly rather than finding out by dragging your bags up a staircase.

If you didn't know: Seoul Metro says that as of late 2025 every station has at least "one accessible route" running from an entrance down to the platform via elevator. That only guarantees one route per station, though — if the entrance with the elevator is on the opposite side from where you need to go, you'll have to walk back across the station anyway. And if that elevator happens to be out of service, walking to the next nearest accessible station adds roughly 10-15 minutes while you're still dragging your bags.

Seoul Donghaeng Map (App Store, Play Store, ONE store; quick sign-up via KakaoTalk, Naver or Google) · the Ttata Subway app's "accessibility" menu shows where wheelchair fast-chargers and video phones are located at each station · for help on the spot, call Seoul Metro's customer center at 1577-1234 for a one-stop escort service where staff walk with you through boarding, transfers and the exit.

Every Seoul subway station is laid out differently, and at transfer stations in particular, the distance between the elevator-equipped entrance and the platform can be considerable. Where Line 2 crosses another line especially, the stairs and the elevator are often far apart, so following signage alone without a map app often lands you at an exit with no elevator at all.

If you're carrying a lot, it's worth simply asking a station employee first. Tell the customer service desk which direction you're heading, and they'll point you to the nearest accessible route; if getting around alone is difficult, calling the center ahead of time gets you a staffer who travels with you. If a sign says an elevator is out of service, asking a staffer for the alternate route on the spot is the fastest fix.
