Bottom line: The Royal Guard-Changing Ceremony in front of Daehanmun Gate at Deoksugung Palace runs only twice a day, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. It does not run at all on Mondays. From City Hall Station (Line 1) Exit 1, it is about 256 meters, a 3-4 minute walk, to the gate.

If you didn't know: Miss the 11 a.m. show and you lose a full three hours waiting for the 2 p.m. one. Plan a Monday visit and the ceremony simply does not happen that day. The ceremony itself does not run long, so arriving late often means the guards have already filed back inside the gate, leaving nothing to photograph.

Schedule Tuesday-Sunday, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., twice daily (closed Mondays, held year-round in 2026) · Admission free · Location in front of Daehanmun Gate, Deoksugung Palace, 99 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul · Access about 256m (3-4 min walk) from Exit 1, City Hall Station, Line 1 · Inquiries +82-2-6242-7402.

Guards in red robes carry tridents and ceremonial swords, filing out toward Daehanmun Gate to the beat of a drum. Shouted commands and the clash of blades briefly drown out the traffic along Sejong-daero. The ceremony, reconstructed in 1996 after historical research into Joseon-era palace guard duty, runs year-round under the city of Seoul. On some days a patrol procession circles the palace walls once the changing itself is finished. The stone wall path outside Daehanmun is worth a stroll any time, but catching the ceremony itself means sticking to the clock. Travelers touring Myeong-dong or City Hall around midday can time it for the 11 a.m. show, while those finishing an afternoon itinerary can swing by for the 2 p.m. one.
