Bottom line: Seongsu-dong is the Seoul neighbourhood where a single cup of coffee can anchor a whole day. Start at Onion Seongsu, which opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 on weekends, with a salt bread and an americano. Walk Yeonmujang-gil and the handmade-shoe alley, then move on to Daelim Changgo, the red-brick former rice mill that opens at 11:00 and is regarded as the original of Korea's warehouse cafés. Spend the afternoon at Seoul Forest, which is free and always open, and at Understand Avenue, built from 116 shipping containers. All of it is within walking distance of Exit 2 of Seongsu Station on Subway Line 2, and the fixed cost of the day is one subway fare of 1,550 won plus whatever you drink.

If you didn't know: Most warehouse cafés in Seongsu-dong open at 11:00. If you land on a morning flight and come straight here at 9am, Daelim Changgo — the place that started the neighbourhood's transformation — is still shut. The only one already open is Onion Seongsu (08:00 weekdays, 09:00 weekends), and Seoul Forest, which charges no admission and never closes, is at its quietest in the morning. Plan the day in the wrong order and you will spend two hours waiting on the street. Renting a car is the other mistake: Understand Avenue and the handmade-shoe street have no parking at all.

Coffee first — Onion Seongsu sits right outside Exit 2 of Seongsu Station, at the mouth of the café street. It occupies a building put up in 1970, kept largely as it was on the outside and rebuilt inside. The signatures are salt bread and chocolate salt bread, crisp outside and soft within, and the americano and vanilla latte lean strong. Takeout is available. Because it opens at 08:00 on weekdays, it is close to the only option in this neighbourhood for making bread and coffee your breakfast. If you skipped the hotel buffet, this is your first meal.

What to walk after the coffee — After 11:00, move to Daelim Changgo. It is a red-brick building used as a rice mill in the 1970s; the structure and the old signage were kept, and the vast interior turned into a space for exhibitions and fashion shows. It led the change in Seongsu-dong's back streets and is called the original of the warehouse cafés that have since spread across the country. Yeonmujang-gil, the street linking the two cafés, is the spine of the neighbourhood, and auto-repair shops and printing works are still running between the select shops and cafés. One block in, the handmade-shoe street holds some 350 finished-shoe manufacturers and about 100 processing and materials suppliers — more than 70 percent of Korea's handmade-shoe industry is concentrated here. Even if you are not having shoes made, walking it in the daytime, when workshop doors stand open, shows you what a street with its factories still alive looks like.

What to see in the afternoon — Seoul Forest opened in 2005 on the site of Seoul's first water-supply reservoir, built in 1908. It is divided into four parts — a culture and arts park, an experiential learning garden, an ecological forest and a wetland ecology park — and it meets the Han River. There is no admission fee and it is always open, so you can carry in the coffee you took away and sit with it. Understand Avenue, by the park, is a complex built from 116 shipping containers, open 10:00 to 22:00, mixing select shops, restaurants, cafés and exhibition space; it has drawn eight million visitors in total and takes more than 1.3 million a year. Since the cafés stay open until 22:00, you can eat dinner and close the day with coffee again, and walking back to Seongsu Station puts you one Line 2 ride from the city centre.
