Bottom line: Buying a Climate Card or a 1-7 day short-term transit card with a foreign-issued card at a Seoul subway ticket machine adds an average 3.7% fee. If you'd rather skip it, buy a prepaid transit card with cash at the airport or a convenience store; if you want to use your foreign card directly, 440 machines across 273 stations can do it.

If you didn't know: Not knowing about this fee means losing 3,700 won on every 100,000 won you load. On the flip side, some travelers who don't know the option exists at all assume foreign cards can't buy transit cards, and waste time going back out to exchange cash they already had.

At a glance

Effective March 17, 2026 · Available at 440 machines across 273 stations on Seoul Subway Lines 1-8 · Products: Climate Card, 1-7 day short-term transit cards · Average fee: 3.7% · 30-day passes are not yet available for purchase with foreign cards.

When you insert a foreign card at the ticket machine, the screen shows the final amount with the fee added before you confirm payment. The fee reflects the overseas card issuer's currency conversion and settlement costs and doesn't apply to domestically issued cards. It looks small on a single purchase, but it adds up if you top up more than once. There's a difference by nationality worth knowing: Chinese travelers used to Alipay or WeChat Pay should note the machines don't yet support those apps — only card or cash. Travelers from the US or Japan can simply insert their usual Visa or Mastercard, so the process itself is straightforward. If you're staying long enough to need several top-ups, the surest way to avoid the fee entirely is to open a Korean debit card and load the transit card with that instead.
