Bottom line: The Seoraksan cable car (Sogongwon to Gwongeumseong) sells round-trip tickets only, bought in person on the day — no reservations — but if you're traveling with a senior, know in advance that the senior discount isn't running right now.

If you didn't know: From September 19 to November 15, 2026 — peak autumn-foliage season — the senior discount (age 65 and up) does not apply. Travelers who bring an older parent expecting a discount end up paying the full adult fare of 16,000 won instead. There's no one-way ticket either, so a plan to ride up and walk down isn't an option here. Cancel up to 10 minutes before boarding and you get a full refund; cancel after that and you lose 20 percent.

Round-trip fare: adult (middle-school age and up) 16,000 won · child (age 3–elementary school) 12,000 won · free under age 3 · No reservations — same-day, in-person purchase only · One-way distance 1.128km, arrival altitude 699m, 50-passenger cars · Suspended in high winds or bad weather · Full refund up to 10 minutes before boarding, 20 percent deducted after · From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, intercity/express buses to Sokcho take roughly two hours · From Sokcho to Seorakdong (Sogongwon), city bus 7 or 7-1 takes about 40 minutes.

Inside the cable car climbing toward Gwongeumseong, the whole autumn-colored ridge of Seoraksan spreads out beneath your feet. Lines get long in fall, and on windy days the cable car simply stops running, so on a rough-weather day it's safer to head out early in the morning. For a Seoul day trip, take an early express bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, then transfer to a local bus from Sokcho to Seorakdong — check that day's bus schedule on a bus-ticketing app before you leave, since timetables shift. The last bus back to Seoul is usually in the evening, but it varies by season and day of the week, so check the last departure time at the Sokcho terminal as soon as you arrive.
