Bottom line: Namhansanseong, a UNESCO World Heritage fortress, is free to enter as a park. Take Seoul Subway Line 8 to Sanseong Station, go out Exit 2, transfer to a bus, and you'll reach the Namhansanseong Rotary inside the fortress in about 10 minutes — an easy day trip from Seoul.

If you didn't know: If you don't realize the park itself is free and only look at the Haenggung Palace admission fee (2,000 won for adults), you might turn back without ever walking the fortress wall trail — the very thing that earned this site its UNESCO listing. On the flip side, ticket sales for Haenggung Palace end 30 minutes before closing time (4:30 p.m. in winter months), so arriving too late means you can't get in even if you want to pay.

From the fortress wall, ridge after ridge of mountains unfolds to Seoul's southeast, and in autumn the foliage runs the length of the wall. Buildings inside the fortress, including the Sueojangdae command post, still carry traces of their role as a temporary capital during the Qing invasion of Joseon in the 17th century. The exact shuttle bus route and last departure time aren't listed on the official page, though, so plan to catch a bus back toward Sanseong Station before sunset — Seoul's Line 8 subway generally stops running around midnight.
