Bottom line: At Dongdaemun's dak-hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) alley, solo diners can order — but the dish is sold only by the whole chicken, which serves 2 to 3 people. Go alone and you either finish it all yourself or leave food behind. At Jinokhwa Halmae Wonjo Dak-hanmari (18 Jongno 40-ga-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul), widely considered the alley's original shop, one pot costs 33,000 won.

If you didn't know: Paying 33,000 won solo is effectively double what you'd pay per person if you came with one other traveler (16,500 won each). Many shopfronts here don't clearly display a card-payment sign, so if you show up without cash, hunting for a way to pay can cost you an extra 10-15 minutes (estimate).

Jinokhwa Halmae Wonjo Dak-hanmari · 18 Jongno 40-ga-gil, 2nd floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul · Phone 02-2275-9666 · Dak-hanmari 33,000 won (add-on noodles, rice cakes, mushrooms 2,000 won each; potato noodles 3,000 won; rice 1,000 won) · Hours are reported by industry sources as 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day (last order 11:30 p.m.), but this is not officially confirmed · From Dongdaemun Station (Line 4), take Exit 8 or 9, walk straight, then turn left at the IBK bank building.

The milky chicken broth bubbles in a big metal pot, garlic and scallion rising first. Regulars dip the tender leg and breast meat in vinegar-soy sauce, then finish the leftover broth with noodles or dumpling dough added at the end. The alley, tucked inside Sinjin Market, holds about nine dak-hanmari restaurants facing each other, Jinokhwa Halmae among them (per a 2017 Seoul city count). Every signboard carries a Japanese label, "タッカンマリ," and a Chinese one, "鸡火锅," alongside the Korean — a sign this neighborhood has long served foreign customers. Tell the staff your party size at the ground-floor entrance for a number, and during busy evening hours you'll be called upstairs in order. On winter evenings the line can stretch outside, so an early dinner or lunchtime visit cuts the wait.
