Bottom line: The Buyeo Chrysanthemum Festival at Gungnamji Pond in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province, runs free of charge through November 8, 2026, and it's an easy day trip by intercity bus from Seoul — as long as you remember the last bus back leaves at 8:30pm.

If you didn't know: Miss that fact and you can easily lose track of time photographing the chrysanthemum displays at sunset, then miss the last Buyeo-to-Seoul bus at 20:30. Miss it, and you're stuck in Buyeo until the first bus at 6:40am the next morning, likely paying an estimated 50,000 won or so for a motel you didn't plan for. Know it, and a round trip costs just 37,400 won (18,700 won each way) to see a completely free festival and still make it back to Seoul the same day.

How we checked this

The festival grounds are laid out as five themed zones — history, scenery, connection, fragrance and healing — with chrysanthemum sculptures shaped like Buyeo-specific symbols such as the gilt-bronze incense burner and the Sabi Gate. It's organized by Buyeo County and run by the county's Agricultural Technology Center and Chrysanthemum Research Association. The dates, venue and free admission were checked on the Special Times (specialtimes.co.kr) article page, and the first/last bus times and fares between Seoul Nambu Terminal and Buyeo were checked on the national intercity bus timetable site (Asamaru), both viewed on 2026-11-04. Temporary schedule changes or cancellations weren't confirmed, so double-check on a bus ticketing site before you go.
