Bottom line: The National Hangeul Museum in Yongsan is closed until its October 2028 reopening, after a February 2025 fire compounded an already-planned expansion closure. If you want a Hangeul-related exhibit now, go instead to the joint special exhibition "From Dots to the World: 100 Years of Hunmaengjeongeum" at the National Museum of World Writing Systems in Incheon Songdo (free, through 2027-02-14), or to the National Museum of Korea right next door (free permanent galleries).

If you didn't know: Show up at the Yongsan Hangeul Museum without checking first, and you'll find a closed building and nothing else. Backtracking to Songdo in Incheon for the exhibit adds a subway fare each way plus roughly an hour one-way — enough to cost you another stop on your itinerary that day.

Alternative 2) National Museum of Korea — 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul; permanent exhibits free, special exhibits paid; open Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri/Sun 09:30-17:30, Wed/Sat 09:30-21:00 (last entry 30 min before closing); from 2026 also closed the first Monday of March, June, September and December; tel 02-2077-9000.

A fire broke out on floors 3 and 4 of the National Hangeul Museum on February 1, 2025, during expansion construction. One firefighter was injured, and roughly 89,000 items in the collection were moved to the National Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum of Korea for safekeeping. With repair and expansion work now combined, reopening has slipped to October 2028. In the meantime, the museum is marking the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day with exhibits and events hosted at other institutions' venues; November's installment is this joint exhibition in Incheon with the National Museum of World Writing Systems and the Songam Braille Library, marking 100 years since Hunmaengjeongeum — the Korean braille system — was promulgated.

How we checked this

The October 2028 reopening plan and the fire/collection-relocation details were checked against Korea Times and Newsis reports; the Incheon museum's hours, closing day and address against Yeonsu-gu's tourism information page; and the National Museum of Korea's hours and closing days against museum.go.kr's visitor information page — all checked 2026-11-06.
