Bottom line: If you bought anything tax-free at Incheon Airport, scan your passport at a self-service refund kiosk in the departure area before you check in — that's how you get the tax back on the spot.

If you didn't know: If the kiosk flags your refund for a customs check and your checked bag has already been loaded onto the plane, the refund is cancelled right there. You lose the entire tax amount on everything you bought over 15,000 won per receipt — easily tens of thousands of won gone for nothing.

At a glance

Self-service kiosks (open 24 hours) — Terminal 1: duty-free area 3F near Gate 28, and Concourse 3F near Gate 115; Terminal 2: duty-free area 3F opposite Gate 250, near Gate 253. Refund counter hours: T1 07:00–22:00, T2 07:00–21:00. Minimum purchase per receipt: 15,000 won. Inquiries: Incheon International Airport Corporation customer center, +82-1577-2600.

When you spend over 15,000 won at a participating duty-free store, show your passport to get both the receipt and the domestic-tax refund slip — keep both until you actually leave the country, because without that slip there's nothing to claim at all.

At the kiosk, scan your passport and the already-approved amount is paid out right away; if it's a large sum or you don't want cash, you can have it paid to a card in your own name instead. But if the kiosk marks your case for a customs check, the process changes — you then have to bring the unopened items, the sales-confirmation slip and your passport to the customs desk and get them verified before you can leave.

How we checked this

Tell the airline staff at check-in if your checked bag contains refund-eligible items, since it's safer to carry those in your cabin bag instead. If you do check them, the bag needs a tag so customs can verify it, and only after the kiosk and customs-desk steps are done does the bag go back onto the oversized-baggage belt. I checked the kiosk locations, counter hours, minimum purchase amount and the customs-check procedure on the Incheon International Airport Corporation's official website (airport.kr) on 2026-11-08.
