Incheon Airport to Seoul Station in 43 Minutes: The Express Train That Saves Time and 72,000 Won

Step out of the arrivals hall at Terminal 1 of Incheon International Airport, Korea's main gateway, and most foreign travelers are immediately confronted with two signs: "Express Train" and "All-Stop Train." Buy a ticket at the wrong counter without knowing why there are two separate services to Seoul Station, Seoul's central rail hub, and you only realize later how different the fare and travel time really are.

At a glance: route Incheon International Airport (Terminals 1 and 2) to Seoul Station, travel time 43-51 minutes on the express train versus 59-66 minutes on the all-stop train, fares 13,000 won for adults and 9,500 won for children on the express train versus about 5,350 won (with a transit card) on the all-stop train, operating hours from Seoul Station run from the first train at 6:10 a.m. to the last at 10:50 p.m., tickets at the official site airportrailroad.com, inquiries at 1599-7788.

The express train, run by Korail AREX, the operator of the airport rail line, runs nonstop between Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station with reserved seating and luggage-cart service. The all-stop train, by contrast, calls at eight transfer stations including Gimpo Airport and Hongik University Station and runs much like an ordinary subway line. Over the same route, the express train takes 43 minutes while the all-stop train takes 59, a 16-minute difference, and the fare gap between the express train's 13,000 won and the all-stop train's 5,350 won comes to 7,650 won.

A taxi costs far more. Under Seoul's official taxi fare schedule, the metered rate is replaced by a fixed zone fare for the Incheon Airport-to-Jung-gu/Jongno route that covers the Seoul Station area: 85,000 won for a standard taxi and 120,000 won for a deluxe or premium taxi. Compared with the express train's 13,000 won fare, that is a saving of at least 72,000 won. Late at night, between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., a 40 percent surcharge is added on top, widening the gap even further.

Express train tickets can be bought at the dedicated AREX counter and ticket machines in the basement of Seoul Station, or through the airportrailroad.com website and mobile app, and because seats are assigned, tickets must be issued before boarding. The all-stop train needs only a transit card or a single-journey ticket and can be boarded immediately, like a regular subway, making it a good fit for travelers with light luggage who are used to transferring. For anyone with heavy bags or arriving late at night, trading 7,650 won for 16 fewer minutes on the express train can be the more sensible choice.
