What official bank data shows about airport counters versus pre-booked mobile exchange

Kim Taecheol, ReporterPublished KST

At the currency exchange counter in the arrival hall of Incheon International Airport, a foreign traveler pulling a suitcase looks up at the rate board. They want to change dollars into won, but the number on the screen does not match the rate they checked on a portal site beforehand. When they ask the counter clerk, the answer is simple: that is just how it works when you exchange cash on the spot at the airport.

At a glance: According to the Korea Federation of Banks' foreign exchange guide (disclosed in September 2026), the US dollar cash exchange commission at Woori Bank, Hana Bank and KB Kookmin Bank's Incheon Airport branches is 4.20 percent for all three, with no preferential discount. The same banks' online and mobile pre-booked exchange carries a base commission of 1.75 percent, with discounts of up to 90 percent. Hana Bank's benchmark exchange rate posted on October 2, 2026 was 1,363.90 won per dollar.

The exchange commission is the gap between the day's benchmark rate and the cash rate actually applied. The Korea Federation of Banks officially explains that Incheon Airport branches apply a different commission rate because, as international airport locations, most of their business is exchange transactions and their operating costs, such as rent, run higher than ordinary branches. Pre-booking through a smartphone app, by contrast, lets banks compete for customers by offering much steeper discounts.

Running the numbers shows a clear gap. On a day when the benchmark rate is 1,363.90 won per dollar, exchanging $500 on the spot at an airport counter, with no discount applied to the 4.20 percent commission, yields about 653,300 won. Booking through the same bank's app in advance and getting the maximum 90 percent discount, which brings the effective commission down to 0.175 percent, yields about 680,700 won. For the same $500, the amount of won a traveler walks away with differs by more than 27,000 won.

Hana Bank and KB Kookmin Bank are disclosed as offering discounts of up to 90 percent, and Shinhan Bank and Woori Bank also offer up to 90 percent depending on conditions, according to the Korea Federation of Banks. Official guidance also notes that the discount conditions, the branches where cash can be picked up, and the timing of when a booking becomes available all differ by bank, so it is worth checking before applying.

Exchange rates at private money-changers in areas such as Myeongdong (a busy shopping district in central Seoul popular with foreign tourists), however, are not disclosed daily the way bank rates are, so there is no official data confirming an exact gap with airport rates. What official figures do confirm is that, even within a single bank, there can be a difference of tens of thousands of won between the airport counter and a pre-booked mobile exchange. Spending just a few minutes on a smartphone to book an exchange before boarding means a traveler can land, show a passport, and walk away with a better amount.
