In the alley in front of Gyeonggijeon Shrine in Jeonju Hanok Village, foreign travelers in rented hanbok pose for photos against a backdrop of tiled roofs, even on an ordinary weekday morning. Beyond the dark wave of eaves, the red-brick bell tower of Jeondong Catholic Cathedral rises in the distance.

At a glance: From Yongsan Station in Seoul, the KTX to Jeonju Station takes about 1 hour 26 minutes to 2 hours 29 minutes, with an adult general-seat fare of 31,600 won and 27 trips a day, according to Korail's schedule. From Jeonju Station, it's roughly a 25-minute bus ride to the village (several routes, including 112, 79 and 508, stop at 'Jeondong Cathedral (Hanok Village)'), or about 7,000 to 8,000 won by taxi. Admission to Gyeonggijeon is 3,000 won for adults, 2,000 won for teenagers, and 1,000 won for children (1,000/800/500 won for Jeonju residents), open year-round from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; entry is free on the last Wednesday of each month, Culture Day. Jeondong Cathedral is free to visit, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside Mass hours.

The village gathers more than 700 traditional hanok in the Pungnam-dong area of Jeonju's Wansan District, making it the only hanok district at the center of a Korean city. At its heart, Gyeonggijeon is a shrine built in 1410 to house a portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty; it burned down during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s and was rebuilt in 1614. A five-minute walk away, Jeondong Cathedral, built between 1907 and 1914 in a Gothic-Romanesque style, can be toured inside and out free of charge.

Hanbok rental shops line the village's alleys. At one such shop, prices start at 7,000 won, with rental periods of 1.5, 2.5, or 4 hours; adding hairstyling or accessories raises the cost. Most shops operate year-round from around 9 or 10 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m., with the return deadline typically 30 minutes before closing.

A day trip from Seoul is doable: take an early KTX down, cover the essentials — Gyeonggijeon, Jeondong Cathedral, Omokdae and the like — and catch an evening train back. The Hanok Village Daeseong public parking lot is free, and a shuttle bus runs between the parking lot and the village from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
