Bottom line: If this is your first trip to Seoul, book your hotel in the Myeongdong/Jongno/Seoul Station area north of the river, not in Gangnam. Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong, Gwangjang Market, Myeongdong, Namsan, Dongdaemun and Cheonggyecheon are all within walking distance or one or two subway stops of each other, and the airport railway runs straight there with no transfer. Unless you're in Seoul for a COEX trade show or Gangnam shopping, a Gangnam hotel means crossing town by subway every single day.

If you didn't know: from Gangnam Station, you ride Line 2 one stop to Gyodae Station, transfer to Line 3, and still have 13 more stations to go to reach Gyeongbokgung Station — one transfer, roughly 35-40 minutes (estimate, excluding waiting and crowding). From Myeongdong Station, you ride Line 4 one stop to Chungmuro, transfer to Line 3, and it's just 4 stations to Gyeongbokgung — one transfer, roughly 15 minutes (estimate). Even a single round trip to the palace area costs a Gangnam hotel guest about 40-50 extra minutes a day; over a five-night stay that's more than three hours spent on trains. The airport run differs too — AREX (the airport railway) runs from Incheon Airport only as far as Seoul Station, not into Gangnam. A hotel near Seoul Station is a direct, transfer-free ride on the all-stop train: 4,750 won, 59 minutes to Terminal 1. A Gangnam hotel requires either an airport limousine bus (e.g. route 6009, via COEX, Samseong, Gangnam and Yangjae stations) or an extra subway transfer at Seoul Station or Gongdeok.

At a glance

North-of-the-river hotels (Myeongdong/Jongno/Seoul Station) — Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, Gwangjang Market, Myeongdong, Namsan, Dongdaemun and Cheonggyecheon, eight sights within a 2-3km radius, walkable or one to two subway stops apart. To Gyeongbokgung Station: one transfer, about 15 minutes (estimate). From the airport: direct on AREX with no transfer, 4,750 won/59 minutes on the all-stop train or 13,000 won/43 minutes on the express (Seoul Station-Terminal 1, per airportrailroad.com). Gangnam hotels — the main sights are COEX, Bongeunsa Temple, Garosu-gil and the Seonjeongneung royal tombs, about four spots, each two or three subway stops from the others. To Gyeongbokgung Station: one transfer, about 35-40 minutes (estimate). AREX does not reach Gangnam, so you need a limousine bus or an extra subway transfer.

From a north-of-the-river hotel, a day can run entirely on foot and one or two subway stops: watch the Gyeongbokgung guard-changing ceremony in the morning, walk up into the Bukchon alleys, stop for tea in Insadong, ride one stop to Gwangjang Market in Jongno for bindaetteok, then spend the evening at the Myeongdong night market and Namsan. Dongdaemun and Cheonggyecheon are two or three stops away either way. Gangnam is different. Its main sights — the Starfield Library at COEX, Bongeunsa, Garosu-gil and Seonjeongneung — sit two or three subway stops apart from each other, so even covering all four in one day is a stretch. The gap between stitching a day together on foot from a north-of-the-river hotel and shuttling back and forth by subway from Gangnam only widens the longer you stay.

It's a different calculation if you're in Seoul for a COEX trade show or convention, a concert or event in the Gangnam area, or shopping at the K-beauty flagship stores along Gangnam-daero and Garosu-gil. For that kind of trip, a Gangnam hotel actually shortens your commute — COEX is a walk or one subway stop away, and you don't need to cross to the north side every day. Which area wins depends on whether your trip is built around shopping and conventions or palaces and old streets.

We could not find official statistics or institutional data comparing average hotel prices between Gangnam and the north-of-the-river area, so no price figures are given here. Rates for hotels of the same grade swing widely by date and booking time, and stating a single area-wide average would be an unsupported number.
