Bottom line: In Yeonnam-dong, one cup of coffee is enough to turn into a full, car-free day. From Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, walk about 15 minutes along the Gyeongui Line Forest Path (estimated by map distance) to reach Seodanggae 2nyeon Roasters. After coffee, walk back down the same path to Gyeongui Line Book Street — the whole loop costs nothing in transport. The cafe opens at 10am and Book Street at 11am, so start with coffee and work your way down.

If you didn't know: Book Street's bookstore-themed stalls are all closed on Mondays, so that section of the walk loses its main draw. Seodanggae stops taking drink orders at 11pm, so arriving close to midnight means walking with no coffee. Bringing a pet also gets you 20% off drinks — skip that detail and you just pay full price without knowing it.

At a glance

Gyeongui Line Forest Path, Yeonnam-dong section — connects directly to Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, open 24 hours, free. Seodanggae 2nyeon Roasters — 129-6 Donggyo-ro 51-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, open daily 10:00-24:00 (last drink order 23:00), pet-friendly (20% off drinks with a pet), menu prices were not confirmed in official sources. Gyeongui Line Book Street — roughly 250m between Exit 6 of Hongik Univ. Station and Wawu Bridge, 11:00-20:00, closed Mondays, free. Tickets/booking is not needed for any of this — it's all walk-in.

The forest path kept the old railway tracks in place instead of removing them — gravel fills the space between the ties, and the smell of grass from the bushes on either side hits before the coffee does. Seodanggae 2nyeon Roasters fills an entire four-story building, so the smell of roasting beans spills out from the ground-floor entrance. Its signature Basque cheesecake and egg tart are baked in-house. Walk about 20 minutes toward Wawu Bridge along the path and you reach Gyeongui Line Book Street, lined with book-shaped sculptures and bookstore-style stalls. Unlike Seongsu-dong's warehouse-cafe district, Yeonnam-dong needs no car at all — coffee, a walk and browsing books all happen on foot.
