Bottom line: Gyeongbokgung and Jongmyo Shrine close on Tuesdays, while Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung close on Mondays. If you're fitting Seoul's five royal sites into one trip, plan around these two closed days.

If you didn't know: Show up at Gyeongbokgung on a Tuesday without knowing this and you lose about 40 minutes of subway and walking time round-trip, plus an entire palace visit slot for the day (editorial estimate). It stings more right now, since all four main palaces, Jongmyo and the Joseon royal tombs are free to enter from October 29 to November 15, 2026 — though Changdeokgung's Secret Garden special tour is not included in that free period.

How we checked this

Gyeongbokgung and Jongmyo Shrine keep Tuesday as their regular closed day, while Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and the Joseon royal tombs keep Monday; these closed days stay in effect even during the current free-admission period. Regular admission, per 2026 reporting, is 3,000 won for Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung and 1,000 won for Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, Jongmyo and most royal tombs (500 won at King Sejong's tomb), 9,000 won in total for all five. An integrated ticket covering the four palaces and Jongmyo once each within six months costs 6,000 won and does not include Changdeokgung's Secret Garden. Jongmyo normally allows entry only on guided, timed tours, but during the free period visitors can walk in without a reservation. On the last Wednesday of each month ("Culture Day"), the palaces and tombs are also free, except the Secret Garden. An admission-fee increase is reportedly under review, but no new price or date has been announced. These closed-day, fee, integrated-ticket and free-period details were confirmed on screens covering Korea Heritage Service's Royal Palaces and Tombs Center notices, checked 2026-10-31.
