Bottom line: At an Olive Young store with an "instant refund" sign — the Myeongdong Town Global flagship is one — spend 15,000 won or more, show your physical passport at the counter, and the VAT comes off right there at checkout. You don't need to queue at the airport refund counter later.

If you didn't know: Leave your passport behind and miss the instant refund, and you'll pay full price, keep the tax-free receipt, and have to line up at the airport refund counter on departure day instead — and if you never got that receipt, the money is simply gone. The refund is 5-8% of what you spend, so on a 100,000-won basket that's 5,000-8,000 won, and on 300,000 won it's 15,000-24,000 won you'd otherwise walk away without on the spot. Not every Olive Young branch does instant refunds either — pay full price at one without the sign and there's no way to get it back there.

At a glance

Minimum purchase 15,000 won per receipt · refund 5-8% of the purchase (rounded to the nearest 1,000 won) · physical passport required (no mobile passport, no alien registration card; not available if you've stayed in Korea over 6 months) · sanitary products, shopping bags and dried-fruit items excluded · Myeongdong Town Global store: 53 Myeongdong-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, daily 10:00-22:30 · applies only at Olive Young branches marked for instant refund, not every store.

How we checked this

According to Olive Young's Myeongdong Town Global official guide, spending 15,000 won or more in-store and presenting a physical passport lets you pay with 5-8% VAT already deducted. Per-receipt refunds range from a minimum of 15,000 won to a maximum of 1,000,000 won, and sanitary products, shopping bags and dried-fruit items don't qualify. Without a physical passport — or if you've been in Korea more than 6 months — you can't get the instant refund and must pay full price, then claim it back with your tax-free receipt at an airport refund counter. This only works at branches registered for instant refund, not company-wide, so check the signage at the register or ask staff first. Checked on the Olive Young Myeongdong Town Global official site (myeongdongtown.oliveyoung.com) instant-refund page on 2026-11-03.
