Bottom line: Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town starts right under the "Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Street" gate, about a 100-meter walk from Exit 8 of Sindang Station (Lines 2 and 6). At Mabongnim Grandmother's, the smallest tteokbokki order is for two people (11,000 won) — so solo diners should be ready to pay for two.

If you didn't know: most stalls in the alley don't sell single servings. Order alone without knowing this and you'll pay 11,000 won for a two-person portion by yourself — and if you can't finish it, that's money wasted. Order it to go and split it back at your hotel, or find a dining partner, and the per-person cost drops to about 5,500 won.

Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town — around 10-18 Dasan-ro 33-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul · about 100m on foot from Exit 8, Sindang Station (Lines 2, 6) · Mabongnim Grandmother's (5 Dasan-ro 35-gil, Jung-gu · +82-2-2232-8930), open 9 a.m.–midnight (closed 2nd and 4th Mondays) · tteokbokki: 11,000 won for two, 14,000 won for three, 20,000 won for four, 24,000 won for five, drinks 1,500 won (confirm on site, prices can change) · credit cards accepted.

The alley traces its roots to street carts that opened after the Korean War, and is counted among the birthplaces of spicy tteokbokki as it's known today. Red sauce bubbles on wide griddles with the scent of scorched gochujang drifting through the lane, and add-ons like cheese or ramen noodles get tossed straight into the pan on request. Several shops in the alley carry some version of the name "Mabongnim," so more than one sign claims to be the original — check the exact shop name and sign color before you go to avoid ending up at the wrong one. Most places take cards, but small add-ons like extra noodles or drinks often move faster if you have a little cash.
