Bottom line: If you shopped at a "Tax Free" sticker store in Gwangjang Market or Myeongdong, you don't get the full 10% VAT back automatically. In-store "instant refund" only applies when a single purchase is under 1 million won and your same-day total is 5 million won or less; above that, you must claim it as a "post-refund" at the airport departure hall instead.

If you didn't know: Ask a store for an instant refund on a purchase over 1 million won and they will turn you down. If you don't know this and pay full price, you'll have to queue at the airport post-refund counter instead, which can run past 30 minutes at peak times (editorial estimate). Refund agencies also take a commission, so the cash you actually get back is less than the full 10% VAT.

At a glance

Instant refund limit — under 1 million won per purchase, 5 million won or less per day · Downtown refund — up to 6 million won per purchase · Airport post-refund — no purchase-amount limit · VAT 10%, individual consumption tax 5-20% depending on item · Since April 2026, cruise passengers can also get instant/downtown refunds at city duty-free shops · Ask at Korea Customs Service or the refund-agency counter inside the store.

How we checked this

Only stores displaying a "Tax Free" or "Tax Refund" sign qualify, and private agencies such as Global Blue, Global Tax Free, Easy Tax Refund, Cube Refund and eTAX FREE process the refund for a commission, which is why you never get the full 10% back. The instant/post-refund thresholds and the cruise-passenger expansion were announced by Korea Customs Service; this was confirmed on the Tax Times report page (dated 2026-04-03) covering the announcement, checked 2026-10-31.
