Bottom line: This applies only to foreigners who have been enrolled in Korea's National Pension (usually after 90+ days of registered stay) and are about to leave Korea for good. Tourists can skip this one. Whether you can get your National Pension contributions back as a lump sum when you leave Korea permanently depends on your nationality — specifically, whether your home country has a social security agreement with Korea, and what kind. Some nationalities get the lump-sum refund, others have their Korean contribution period merged into their home-country pension record instead and get no cash refund at all. Call the National Pension Service (NPS) at 1355, or visit a branch, before you leave to find out which applies to you.

If you didn't know: Even if you qualify for the lump-sum refund, you only have 5 years from the date your entitlement arises — effectively your departure date — to claim it. Miss that window and the statute of limitations kicks in: the money is gone for good. As an illustration, a foreign worker earning 3,000,000 won a month who works for 3 years (36 months) before leaving would have paid, at the 2026 contribution rate of 9.5% (4.75% employee + 4.75% employer), about 285,000 won a month combined — roughly 10,260,000 won over 36 months before interest. Miss the 5-year claim deadline and none of that comes back.

At a glance

Apply or ask at an NPS branch or call center (1355) · 2026 contribution rate 9.5% (4.75% employee, 4.75% employer — the first change since 1998) · 42 countries have a social security agreement covering lump-sum refunds (Iran, Canada, UK, US, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Hungary, France, Australia, Czech Republic, Ireland, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, Denmark, India, China, Spain, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland, Brazil, Finland, Chile, Quebec, Peru, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Croatia, Uruguay, New Zealand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Norway, Argentina) · roughly 25 more countries qualify under reciprocity · claim deadline is 5 years from your departure date · Incheon Airport branch pickup is available but foreign currency only, and not on weekends, public holidays, or the last business day of December.

How we checked this

The list of 42 agreement countries and the reciprocity countries came from the National Pension Service's own lump-sum refund eligibility page (nps.or.kr), checked directly on 2026-11-02. That page did not show the contribution rate or claim deadline. The 9.5% rate effective January 2026 is reported in a 2025-12-29 news article (SBS Biz) describing a joint Ministry of Health and Welfare/NPS announcement — the ministry's own press release could not be opened directly today, so this news report is the closest source used. The 5-year claim deadline comes from explanations of the National Pension Act's statute of limitations for lump-sum refunds; because the deadline can vary by the reason for payment, confirm your own case with NPS directly. The 10,260,000-won figure is an illustrative example the editorial desk calculated from the official rate, not a guaranteed amount — actual refunds vary by income, enrollment period, and accrued interest.
