Bottom line: If a store has a "Tax Refund Shop" or "Tax Free" sticker on its door or counter, foreign shoppers can get the tax taken off on the spot — that's "instant refund." But the moment one receipt tops 1,000,000 won, or your total purchases in Korea pass 5,000,000 won, instant refund stops working for the rest.

If you didn't know: Buy over 1,000,000 won of cosmetics or luxury goods on a single receipt and that receipt doesn't qualify for instant refund. The same goes for anything beyond the 5,000,000 won total cap. Find out only at the airport, and you'll be pulling receipts and items back out to queue at the customs refund counter — cutting into the time you have before your flight.

At a glance

Instant refund conditions — store must display a Tax Refund Shop/Tax Free sticker · minimum eligible purchase is 15,000 won · under 1,000,000 won per receipt · total purchases per foreign traveler capped at 5,000,000 won. Anything over that only gets refunded later at the airport customs refund counter (bring passport, receipts, and the goods) on your departure day — that route has no cap.

Not every shop is enrolled. Only stores registered as tax-refund shops can do this; at a shop that isn't registered, the receipt simply shows the tax-included price. You need to show your passport and ask for the instant refund at checkout, and whether you get it as a card adjustment or cash depends on the store's own method. If you're planning a big purchase — electronics, luxury bags — splitting it across receipts or days, or just planning for the airport refund, saves you the queue later.

How we checked this

The instant-refund thresholds (under 1,000,000 won per receipt, 5,000,000 won total cap, 15,000 won minimum) were checked on 2026-11-06 against Tax Times and Kukinews reports citing the Korea Customs Service. The original customs notice itself was not directly viewed in this check — confirm the current cap with the Korea Customs Service (customs.go.kr) or the store before you travel.
